Butterflies and Beads contest entry by EverildWolfden Butterflies and Beads contest entry by EverildWolfden
My first ever completed contest entry!  This is for the Butterflies and Beads contest over at :iconstitchingpirates:

Materials used: 28 count Evenweave in Antique White (stitched 2 over 2), Mill Hill 'Orchid' seed beads, 12-inch hoop frame and DMC threads.

I got the pattern for this piece from issue 120 of Cross-stitch Gold, although I made some major changes to it.  The design originally had a circular background in greens and pinks, with some heavily back-stitched flowers, and to me that weighed the piece down, and took the interest away from the butterfly.  I wanted the butterfly to be the main focus of the image, especially since I loved the way the beads looked (I'll get to them in a second) and how the shading looked on the actual wings of the butterfly itself.  I was going to put some clusters of french knots in the background, but when I tried it, it just looked a bit odd, so I decided to leave the rest of the canvas blank. There was a LOT of backstitching involved on that butterfly, although the antennae (which I had to make up completely) I decided to do in longstitch, in order to get a delicate curve to them.  Now, those beads - before this butterfly, I had NEVER used seed-beads on a project before, so that was a lot of fun (and at times, a lot of stabbing myself with a needle and cursing).  I decided to use the hoop to frame the image (another thing I have never done) so ran running stitch along the back to gather and secure, folding the material over so I don't get a frayed edge, and tied a lace ribbon around the top to hang it up.

Weather I place or not in the contest, I'm really pleased with the way this turned out, and it will make a great Christmas present for my aunt who loves the colour purple (and who is possibly the only person in my family not to have received a cross-stitch from me yet!!)

Edit:  Oh my gosh, I can't believe I came first!!  Thank you so much!
